Internships & Career Planning (IAD) - 1st year PhD (CDT-RAS) students

This course is compulsory for 1st year PhD students of the CDT in Robotics & Autonomous Systems. Many Informatics PhD students break their studies for three to six months to take up an industrial internship. Internships can be beneficial in many ways. You may gain a new perspective on the practical application of your research area, you will get a flavour of working in an industrial setting, and you will make contacts which may be useful to you as your career evolves.

This course aims to help you get the most out of internships, and to see them as part of your developing career plan. It will touch upon

  • planning: identifying what you want from an internship;
  • preparation: practicalities of working in an industrial environment;
  • monitoring: making sure that your internship is going well, and reacting when it isn't;
  • review: feeding your internship experience back into your immediate professional development portfolio, and longer term career plan.

The course will include case studies from previous interns.

This course relates to domains B2, B3, C1 and D1 of the RDF.
